With the weather precipitating in a liquid form in town for the last week, I have been a little hesitant to head up to the ski hill. My friends have been giving me extremely varied and mixed reviews, so this morning as I drove to work and saw that the snow line was quite low, I thought I would check it out for myself. My review: Pretty Darn Fun!
While it has been raining at the lower elevations, up top it has been a wet heavy snow. This has helped cover a lot of the early season hazards, bowl over the alders, and smooth out a lot of the moguls in the trees from the holiday period. The consistency of the snow at the higher elevations can best be described as buttery-smoooooth. You won't be choking on face shots, but its certainly playful.
Because of the weather, Currie Bowl has been closed for a while, but I ran into a friend this afternoon who informed me that Patrol had just opened up Anaconda Glades. We dropped a couple lines through there and had a great time!
Down lower, the skiing wasn't bad either. There is a definite line where the snow gets wetter and heavier, but because the mercury hasn't dropped below 0 the last couple nights, it isn't an ice sheet as I had been led to believe by a couple friends. And with the thermometer dropping, snow currently falling, and the weatherman telling us more white stuff should be coming, things could get pretty good this weekend.
Also, I'd like to thank the guys from Surface Skis for letting me demo some of their wares this afternoon. Surface Skis is born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they know how to bring the fun to the mountain. These guys are one of the most visionary up-and-coming brands in the ski industry. Thanks.
